How do I increase the size of my log files ?

| Larger logfiles mean fewer checkpoints, which often means a lower I/O load on the database. The redo logs created in the default installation are far too small (increase them to a few megabyutes at the pre-install screen if you can), so you may need to increase their size. How is this done ? |
The simple answer is that you cannot 'change the size' of a log file. You can only create new ones, switch logfiles a few times to ensure the current log file is not one of the old ones, then drop the old ones. Examples of how to do this are included in the FAQ answer I keep getting errors in the alert log 'Thread XXX cannot allocate new log - checkpoint not complete'. Is this serious ?
